BEWARE OF BOGUS OFFICALS
Date posted: 13th September 2007

Elderly residents that live in South Ribble are being warned to be on their guard after a "bogus official" type burglary took place in Penwortham.
The incident happened on Hawkesbury Drive on Thursday 6th September at approx 14.30hrs. A male called at a New Progress Housing Association Sheltered Scheme at a flat that belonged to an elderly lady and indicated that he worked for a company called "Progress" and had come to do some gardening and paint the fence. He managed to gain the trust of the elderly lady and was invited into the premises after requesting a glass of water. Whilst the lady was out of sight he removed her purse from her handbag and left the premises.
It is believed the offender also visited two other properties on Hawkesbury Drive prior to this incident offering gardening work but was turned away.
DC Chris Biggs commented, " We strongly advise people to be on their guard against this type of theft. A Progress Property Services van was parked on the street and Progress workmen were legitimately working in the area. The offender has seen this and pretended to be from the organisation conning the lady to let him in to her property.
Never allow anyone into your home unless you are happy that they are there for a genuine reason. If you are not happy do not let them in. Always ask for id and if need be check with the organisation they say they are from - most organisations now make appointments for workmen to call. If you see anything suspicious contact the police. The elderly lady was not hurt in anyway but was shaken up by the incident."
Sue Harrison, Head of Housing Support at New Progress Housing Association: " All our staff carry identification cards and we strongly advise that every customer check this before allowing anybody into their home. We urge people to be vigilant against these unscrupulous individuals and to make sure that they are absolutely sure the 'official' at the door is genuine. If you are in any doubt, please don't let them in and contact us on 01772 450600 to confirm their identity ."
The male was described as having black wavy hair. He had tanned skin was 20 - 30 years old approx 5ft 4, unshaven with brown eyes. He spoke English with a foreign accent and was wearing a sleeveless yellow work jacket, dark trousers, navy blue canvas shoes.
Anyone who may have been in the area or seen anything suspicious when this incident occurred are asked to contact DC Chris Biggs on 01772 415845 or via Southern Communications Centre on 0845 1 25 35 45.
