SCALDING SAFETY ALERT
Date posted: 5th March

Warning sign - hot water running from cold tap

You may have seen recent news reports about a scalding incident that tragically claimed the life of a ten-month-old baby as a result of a boiler fault.

It happened because of a faulty immersion heater in a hot water cylinder and an incorrectly installed water storage cistern. These faults combined to force hot water into the cold water storage cistern, which split pouring near-boiling water through the ceiling of the baby’s bedroom.

New Progress is committed to making sure that nothing like this happens in any of our homes. Progress Property Services has inspected a sample of properties with electric immersion heaters to make sure that they are working correctly and that cold water cisterns are adequately supported in main lofts.

This was an extremely rare incident. However, we want to reduce the risk of this ever happening in any of our homes.

Warning signs

An overheating immersion cylinder normally shows obvious signs that something is wrong. These include:

· very loud noises coming from the immersion cylinder
· the cylinder or airing cupboard become very hot
· hot water running from cold taps

If you experience any of these signs then switch off the heating system immediately and phone our Repairs Contact Centre on 01772 642181.
