What is a women's refuge and what can it offer?
The refuge, Clare House, is a ‘safe house' set up specifically to provide temporary accommodation for women and their children who are escaping domestic abuse. It offers:
- 4 suites, each providing 1 or 2 bedrooms with en-suite bathroom facilities
- Communal living rooms
- Secure play areas inside and outside
- Fully equipped laundry facilities
- Secure external boundaries with CCTV cameras
- Secure entry-phone controlled front door
- Resettlement service
Clare House proves to be a lifeline for many women and children escaping domestic abuse. In 2006-07 alone, the scheme supported 42 women and 75 children seeking refuge by providing safe and secure accommodation, as well as support and advocacy services.
Our refuge staff actively work to raise awareness of domestic abuse in the community generally through workshops and campaigns.
Who can use Clare House?
Any woman, with or without children, who has experienced domestic abuse, can stay at Clare House. The opportunity to live with and talk to others who have had similar experiences is the single most important aspect of refuge life for many women. What to do if you are suffering domestic abuse*
